Hurray of the Riff Raff

ACADEMIC|February 2024 3 weeks

Kolor Studios partnered with concert venues Neumos and Barbozza for a First Thursday event. Students from Cornish and Western Washington University collaborated to create promotional posters for upcoming performances at either Neumos or Barbozza.

I designed a screen-printed poster for the indie alternative band Hurray for the Riff Raff. Neumos hosted a show for their Past is Still Alive tour. Their new album included themes of old America, gambling with luck, growing up, and finding your identity. The poster works as an homage to the album and incorporates needlepoint-inspired type, dice, and the original hand lettering from the album’s cover. These elements work together to make the poster feel nostalgic and reflect the album’s themes and identity.

When designing my poster, I started by listening to Hurray for the Riff Raff’s The Past is Still Alive album while writing down key notes such as memory, identity, and old America. I conducted secondary research by reviewing the promotional material that was already published for this tour, watching music videos, and gathering visual research. I created a moodboard with my findings and sketched some thumbnails. I sketched and vectorized the needlepoint-inspired elements, and then started laying out posters into compositions. I received tons of great feedback on my designs before landing my final composition for screen printing. I did encounter challenges while learning how to screen print, and I learned that if you're doing solid board design, you need to print on a larger screen. All in all, this project was such a great learning experience in terms of new print techniques and peer collaboration.
